6 volt to 12 volt conversion

Could someone please direct me to the the thread which details this procedure? I just picked up a couple of F-1's and plan on converting them along with replacing the wiring.

Thanks

6 volt to 12 volt conversion

https://www.ford-trucks.com/dcforum/48_60/984.html should point you in the right direction. I don't remember seeing it layed out point by point in the board, but you could probably get answers to specific questions here as you go along.

Good Luck!

6 volt to 12 volt conversion

The truck that I'm working now is a 1948 F-1. I do want to keep the stock gauges if at all possible.

Thanks
Mike

knucklebuster,
have you considered going to an 8 volt battery? tractor supply stores have them and you don't have to change anything else to get more cranking power.

Thats a great idea but I want to install electric wipers, a real radio, lights that are bright and a vintage air system. I hate to spend the money but I don't really see any other option.

Thanks!

Umm add a battry works.
add a 12v cell battry and than only use it for the components
utilizing 12v we do it all the time for power amps and high end sound.

How does it recharge and where do you hide it? I'd like to keep this thing looking like it was supposed to be 12 v.

Thanks.

Try this link. Best detailed article I found. I used it and converted to 12v with a GM one wire alternator. No problem at all which is amazing considering my lack of experience with wiring.

We hide them in the trunk on cars and under the bed on trucks
as far as recharging we hide a charging receptacle or a Kill switched alternator from GM or a charging bank as with sound equip we do not want any wiring connected to a charging system while in use it makes noise understand this is only an option not a real fix you can also go with a 12v alternator battery and put a resister kit on any 6v stuff you wish to keep aka gages etc...

6 volt to 12 volt conversion

Most of the conversion is pretty straight forward. Replace all the light bulbs, ignition coil, etc. The one wire GM alternator is a good, easy way to make it happen. The biggest problem is keeping your old guages. You cannot simply use a drop-down resistor. You need a voltage regulator. Some catalogs sell them, or I've seen plans to build one from Radio Shack parts posted on various web sites. Also, the six volt system is positive ground. Those gauges will operate backwards or peg and burn up if your not careful.

Peace, brothers.
