I finally got my 89 F-150 4x4 home today. It is actually not a 5 speed, it is a 4 speed. What trans is it? With the 3.08 gears, I am not worried about going to a 5 speed, just curious what I have.
The truck has a cast iron transmission. The shifter matches the design from the old 86 that my friend had. I know in 1989, the 4 speed was added as an option, having been removed in 88. The 86 had a Borg T-18, so that may be what mine has... if it ever needs rebuilt, I can do it.
Is first gear sychronized? If it is not then you have a NP435 or a T18. If first gear is sychronized then you have a T19.
If it says BorgWarner on the left side above the pto access. That is a 19.
If it has a PTO access on both sides that is a 19.
T18's only had a PTO access on the right side and they had a non-sychronized first gear. "bulldog"
They are not hard at all to repair. They are probably one of the easiest transmissions to work on.

Does counting the pan bolts method work with this truck?
My label was trashed so the parts guy told me abou the trick. Also, if you have a LMC catalog, they have mappings of the different Ford tranny pans on one of the first few pages. You can view their whole ford truck catalog at their web site.
