I have a 1995 F-150 4x4 with the I6 Engine and 5 Speed Mazda Trans. What years are the 5 speed Mazda Trans the same? My trans is starting to grind and I have the oppurtunity to buy one from a 1989 for cheap. Do you know if the one from the 1989 will fit my 1995?
I would think that the two different year transmissions would interchange. One way to check this would be to check on one of the internet sites that rebuild manual transmissions and see if there is a part number change between the two model years of M5R2 manual transmissions.
Or you could check car-parts.com--an internet site of national wrecking yards and see if there is interchangeability between the two model year transmssions.
Or you could call a local wrecking yard and have them check in the Hollander Interchange Manual(I think that is what it is called) .
The only difference I can think of is that the 87-91 trucks used a mechanical speedometer driven off the tailshaft of the transmission (or transfercase since it is 4wd).
Yeah, they're identical. You'd only have issues with the speedo cable if both trucks were 2wd and you were swapping a newer tranny into an older (pre-92) truck.
Also be aware that the synchros on 5th/Reverse are different starting about July of '90. "Old style" were 42 tooth synchros, while the "new style" are 33 tooth. Something to keep in mind should you decide to rebuild it.

Are they interchangeable, ie 33 tooth syncros in a pre 90 M5OD?
As far as I know, the synchros are not interchangeable. However, the transmissions as a whole are. The synchros would only pose a problem if you intended to rebuild it, and grabbed the synchros based off the year of your truck, and not the transmission.
I'm about to put a M5R2 from a '93 into my '89, so there is no fitment issue. Only an internal parts difference.
