Knucklebuster,
In October I put 5391 miles on my 48 pickup in 18 days. It's a stock setup except converted to 12 Volt neg ground. I'm running 12V field coils in the generator and it performs without a flaw. I can't figure where these guys are coming from complaining of dim lights. Just doesn't happen!

If you can fabricate brackets and match the pulley to your fan belt, I would say a standard 65-early 80s Ford alternator and external regulator is the way to go. Wires in easily and is simple/cheap to maintain or replace.
