Flathead 12v Questions

Hey everyone! Quick background of our truck:
Rewired for 12v and 302 installed
Found a Flattie and yanked the 302 back out
I dont want to run 12v positive ground, as that is not how my truck is wired.
What do I need to do to finish the conversion?
Do we need a GM Alternator, or will the Ford alternator off of the 302 work?

She's already wired for the Ford alt. Right. So all ya need is to properly mount it and plug it in. Altho I have never done it I have seen many a flatty with an alt.
Aftermarket swings more twored the GM one wire I think. But mounting the Ford should be just as easy and brackets available.

I used a Ford alternator out of a junk yard F150 - 351 I think, so same deal. Using a painless kit I re-read it 3 times, hooked it up and then came here when it wouldn't start... but once I got it started it charged and everything worked fine.

You are wanting to run 12v neg ground right?

Did you leave the 302 wiring harness in, original wiring, painless kit, converted it yourself - what's the wiring?

I used the generator bracket for the lower, and created my own for the upper (2 bends to offset and a slot).

The engine won't care whether it's turning a fomoco alternator or a delco....they all do pretty much the same thing. The only difference being the wiring for the alternator field. If you already had it working, the wiring should be all set for you. The GM "1 wire" alternators are internally wired, so all you need to do is hook up the "BAT" lead to the battery (with a fuse). There are other connections that are basically for the idiot light, but that lead also can serve to excite the field. If left off, the GM alternator won't come on line until you rev it up to around 1500 RPM or so. That is not much of a problem for most cars and trucks, so it makes the wiring very simple, and therefore, very popular.

I kept the Ford 2g alternator in mine and I had trouble finding a good set of connectors. Mine is an 89 model F150 unit, and Ford was using a set of two special connectors .....one for power and one for the field excite lead. The only replacement connectors that I could find were from Ron Francis, and it cost me around $60 for the alternator harness. The entire truck harness was $200. I can say that the Ron Francis parts were much higher quality than the Painless parts. If I had known all of that going in, I would have gone with a GM style. My neighbor recently converted his 55 chevy from a generator to a one-wire alternator. The local carb-electric shop sold him a rebuilt GM alternator for $35.

I am using a GM alternator 1 wire but ford or GM will work just fine. Enjoy the classic.
