I know this has been addressed before but i am new to a 2001 7.3 psd and want to ask what is the recommended rotella oil weight, filter type, total capacity at oil change and brand of fuel filter I should use?
Thanks,
Jeff
get your filters at fleetfilter.com, great prices for awesome filters
as far as what oil to recommend, you can do a search and see what everyone else uses.
the most popular are
Rotella T or Mobile Delo just make sure that the API has a rating of CI-4 or better. i think the new standard is CJ-4. i'm sure that several folks will chime in with alot of information.
I swear by the 5w40 Rotella Synthetic. You will want 4 bottles, or 15 quarts if you can get it in quarts. The filter is Motorcraft FL-1995 i believe, and if you go to walmart, there is actually a Motorcraft box there, which has the Powerstroke logo right on the side of it. Yes, whatever you do make sure it is a CI-4 or better oil.
Rotella T 5w-40 syn for me too. Works great in cold NH climates. I'd probably
run with Chevron Delo 15w-40 or Schaeffer's 15w-40 blend(LINK) in the warmer southern climates.
the rotella 5-40 syn is a very good oil (i use mobil 1 Delvac but thats a whole other thread) however on the oil filters i would go with mobil 1. i have used the motorcraft FL1995 every since i got my truck and the oil was always pretty black after 1K-2K miles.this last time i used the mobil 1 filter ( after much research) and its still clear after 2k miles. i will only use mobil 1 oil filters from now on
What do you guys think of Regular dino 15w-40 Rotella? I'm thinking of getting that oil since it's only $9.08/gal at Walmart.
I used that for a while. It's a good oil in warmer months. During the winter I had bad romps on cold starts. The synthetic took care of that problem.
Also if you do oil analysis on a regular basis, you'll find that you can run synthetic at longer intervals between changes than you can the dino stuff. For me that's less wrenching time and worth it.
On cold mornings, you can start the engine, and on some occasions for the first few seconds the engine will "romp". Basically it will lope idle badly and sound like a cam'ed out big block. It can get annoying in colder climates where it does it every single day.
I used Rotella 15W40 for my first oil change when I bought my PSD this summer. Now, in mid December we are seeing some colder morning temps (around 15-20 degrees) and I got my first experience of "Romp - Romp" when I started it in the morning.
I decided to switch to the Rotella 5W40 Synthetic last week and will wait to see if this improves the cold morning starts. This weekend we experienced record "warm" temps, so I'll have to wait for the "cold" to return to see if it made a difference!
I've used the Motorcraft filter up to this point (2X) and the oil was very black when drained after 3,000 miles using Rotella 15W40. I may have to try the Mobil-1 Filter if it filters better, but doesn't restrict flow?
however on the oil filters i would go with mobil 1. i have used the motorcraft FL1995 every since i got my truck and the oil was always pretty black after 1K-2K miles.this last time i used the mobil 1 filter ( after much research) and its still clear after 2k miles. i will only use mobil 1 oil filters from now on
