iv heard good stuf about the rotella 15-40 and the syn 5-40. now im starting to think only the 5-40 syn is good? hhhmmm and what dose that motorcraft oil filter cost at wallyworld anyways? and what are you guys with the mobile 1's spending on oil filters?
I know this has been addressed before but i am new to a 2001 7.3 psd and want to ask what is the recommended rotella oil weight, filter type, total capacity at oil change and brand of fuel filter I should use?
Thanks,
Jeff
I bought my 02 used and got a lot of great info here on this forum.
Everybody recomended Rotella T 15W-40 dyno oil (15 quarts)
I have since switched to Rotella T 5W-40 synthetic(15 quarts)
it costs twice as much but is def better for our engine, IMO
I buy it at Walmart, I get the FORD motorcraft oil filter there as well
total cost for synthetic is $75 vs $40 dyno oil
I would look online for fuel filters, but try to buy Ford Motorcraft, the cover and gasket seem to be the best

Update: Well, the "cold" has returned here in PA, it was 24 degrees this morning and I had NO "Romp-Romp" starting this morning. I guess for now, I'll attribute that to the fact that I changed to the Rotella 5W40 one week ago. I was using the Rotella 15W40, but had two episodes of "Romp-Romp" starting during the low 20's two weeks ago. Hopefully that will cure this little "glitch".
Can you share any of the details from your oil analysis results as mileage progresses? Those details would be a welcome bit of true technical knowledge on this issue.

PAFORDMAN: say goodbye to the romps. Im on my second winter with the 5w40 synthetic and have had successful "no romp" starts down into the negative #'s.
I absolutely swear by Amsoil. All the fluids in my 02' SD (except for my radiator fluid) are Amsoil. I also use their oil filters. I change my filter every 7500 miles and have the oil analyzed at that time. I am now at about 17,000 mile and the oil checks out fine (I do not go over 3 filter changes without changing the oil). I also use Amsoil in my ATV and all my lawn equipment. I am not a distributor, I have just had very good experience with Amsoil.
I use AMSOIL 15/W40 HD year round http://www.amsoil.com/storefront/ame.aspx
(the current product i use exceeds API standards)
but i did just read up on a new AMSOIL product that replces 15/40. http://www.amsoil.com/StoreFront/deo.aspx
it is spendy,,,,,,,,,,,but i feel its well worth it, i too use it in my lawn mower, 2 four wheelers and the truck.........and have always had great results.

Sorry, the only Amsoil diesel oil that is API certified (CI-4+, NOT CJ-4) is 15W40 PCO, a synthetic blend! The Deo says "CJ-4" on the bottle, but it
IS NOT CJ-4 API certified! Rotella, and Delo are both "CJ-4" API certified,
and cost much less than the Amsoil oil products!
There's a lot of information on the new CJ-4 standard that was designed for helping with emissions compliance with the '07 engines. There's also some mixed information regarding the use of CJ-4 oils for pre-07 engines. Probably depends mostly on the individual company's additive package.
I'm getting ready to try one of the new CJ-4 5W-40 syns, but I'm going to start by getting baseline test results on the new oil (both straight from the bottle and then again after about 2 days of running it), and then check it again at about 3K miles to see what's going on at that point.
The reason I'm taking this approach and spending the money on analysis is:
- given that I've only had the truck for 3 months, I don't know what's in it now (which I will also get analyzed for comparison reasons),
- I want to know the "base case" for the oil I've chosen in terms of how my sample compares with the company's published data,
- I want to get a true baseline comparison on the oil once it's been in the engine a very short time because of the impact of residual oil contamination from what's there right now, and I'm also installing the OilGuard bypass system for better filtration, and I want to see if the 1 micron filtration on the bypass system depletes any oil characteristics (I've read that it is possible, but want to know for sure).
If I'm not happy with the test results at about 3K miles, I'll change to either the Royal Purple 5W-40 or the Rotella T 5W-40... and start over.
