I put the 6637 filter on my 03 Ex, after reading about it and seeing it on the site here. I was showing it to my Grandfather (who has been around diesels for 40+ years) expressed some concern about the hot air being sucked in through the intake being that it is a open element filter with no heat shrouds, and is just sitting inbetween the battery and master cylinder.
Many real world tests performed by FTE members have shown that the only time "hot" air is drawn into the intake is when the truck is not moving; i.e. hot engine, stopped at signal. When traveling, the intake air temp is about 15º F or less above ambiant air temperature, slightly more in hotter climates and city driving.
I wouldn't worry about it. I've taken temp readings several times with the same setup. The air around the filter is typically only 10-15 degrees warmer than ambient air temp when you are moving. For me, it's worth the tradeoff to get better airflow. That 10 degrees of intake temp difference ultimately won't matter much at all.
I also have taken air temp readings of the pressurized air after the intercooler. The temp of the air going into the engine seems to have a lot more to do with how much boost you're making.
The only time i could see it being a problem is say if you are sled pulling. Lots of load and not lots of ground speed. I would have it running through the hood anyway along with my hood stack. When was the last time you had your EGT up above 1000* below 20mph? Yeah it pulls air from right beside the engine but if you think about it, when you are moving it is all the same temp.
