Could it be the gear position sensor? I know that in certain cars they use a gear position sensor as a safety feature so it won't even turn if you don't have it in park but sometimes those solenoids wear out. Had the solenoid in our old John Deere 3020 Diesel wear out. I was starting the thing by jumping the two poles on the starter with a screwdriver all the time! I replaced the gear position solenoid and now she fires every time you crank it over. From the sound of it that could be your problem...

Ya I dunno man, it could be a million things and trying to narrow it down would cost a lot, but my gut instinct is that the starter is malfunctioning.

I think that was HUMOR.

As in IF you had a tach or speedo problem, your mechanic might suggest smacking the tach or speedo with a hammer (since his only tools are big & little hammers), - which would obviously not be a good idea.

Like I said - HUMOR - get it...?

Wink truck will not start

Ah for the good old days[showing my age] when we could just take the solenoid apart, flip the copper washer over and get another 60,000 miles. When I got my truck I had to put a manual switch to activate my starter and the glow plug solenoids. No other switches to complicate life and hidden away. Kept the ignition on the key though as thats ok for now. Same thing happened on my Taurus in Pennsylvania at midnight in a resturant parking lot. At least with a Ford you can get to the solenoid. Try it on some GM or Mopars without a jack and stands.

Ya I dunno, if this thing keeps being a pain, I'll get rid of it and buy a dodge 2500 with a 5.9 cummins in it.

There are two solenoids in the starter circuit.
The first is mounted on the inner fender.
The second is mounted on the starter.

You can use a piece of wire to jump from the battery positive to the side of the inner fender solenoid that has the wire going down to the starter.

Most trucks the front terminal is battery power, the rear terminal is where the wire to the lower solenoid is attached.

If the engine cranks OK when you jump it that way, it is either the solenoid on the inner fender or the safety interlock on the shifter.

You can then jump from the battery positive to the S terminal on the solenoid mounted on the inner fender. If it cranks OK that way, the problem is the safety interlock.
