There should be two LARGE posts - one with a cable running to the battery, one with a cable running to the starter.
There should be one small post - with a wire covered by a rubber cap covering the post.
Pull the rubber cap/wire off that third post and use a piece of wire to jumper from it to the big post that connects to the battery and see what happens.

The solenoid should a least click. If it doesn't then it is probably your problem. If it does click, but the starter still doesn't turn, then try using a screwdriver to jumper between the two LARGE terminals - basically connecting the battery directly to the starter. If the starter STILL doesn't turn, then the starter is most likely the problem.

Red face truck won't start

Hi, if you have power to the fender[upper] solenoid and it won't start but will if you jump the main wires, don't replace the solenoid till you try running a grounding wire from the solenoid frame to the negative post on the battery. These old trucks seem to have a bunch of grounding probs and the solenoid grounds its frame to the fender. Good luck.

Ya I checked on the selenoid to see if it was still grounded, and it did have a nice ground connection. The selenoid itself is fine....although I did notice there was a wire missing off of my positive terminal, I think its supposed to be connected to the selenoid right?

Hey guys! Ok me and my buddy just jump started it off of the solenoid and she turned over! I drove it around for a bit and when I got home I was curious to see if it would start without me having to jump start it off of the solenoid. Sure enough...I turned the key and the starter fired her right up. Friggen murphy's law eh? This is weird...it stops working and all of a sudden I turn the key and it starts working? My buddy figures that the start is indeed in need of replacement.

He may be right. If the brushes in the starter are badly worn or there is burned spot on the commutator the starter can stop in JUST the right spot to where it can't make a good enough connection to start spinning again. Seen this happen a couple of times with Jeep starters. A whack with a hammer on the case will usually jarr things enough for the brushes to start making enough contact to allow the starter to spin again.

I'd say removing the starter and at least pulling out & examining the brushes would be a good place to start.....

Or how about I just get rid of the piece of shi* and get a new one lol? I'm a pretty busy guy, not a lot of time to tinker with motor stuff, so I'd rather just get a new one. Thanks for all your help man.

If you're able to, try and find a remedy to my other post about overdrive. I'm having problems with that too...

your contacts may be badly worn in the ignition switch or the neutral safety switch may be going south too. It's down on the column for auto's and on the clutch pedal arm for standards.

Yeah, I know all about busy, but at a couple hundred bucks for a starter, I'd take the time to at least look at the brushes if it were me. Your money though....

Cool truck will not start

Sounds like your mechanic has only two hammers in his arsonal of tools. "Big Whack" for starters and "Small whack" for solonoids. Hope you never have any tach or speedometer problems.

here si the quick way to check your problem next time: if your truck is PLEASE put it in neutral and set the brake, go to the solinoin you've already located there is a small wire - unplug it and jumper the terminal to the battery side of the solinoid (just trace cable);if it cranks your problem is on the ignition side. If not listen to here the solinoid itself click, if no replace solinoid; if it does click focus on the starter.
Should you have to replace the starter go ahead and replace the solinoid too as they wear internally
