I've got over 120k on my '03 6.0. No major trouble. I think I found a good one.
You've got to look at the competition to see why Ford possibly got away from the 6.0 so fast. They have to keep up with these higher horse,
longer living engines that the "other two" are producing.
People on here are talking like the 6.0 setup is such a POS, but my undertanding is the 6.4 is just a bored (or stroked, dont know which?) 6.0. The real changes are emmisions, new turbo system and injectors (piezo instead of engine oil Hydraulic). The 6.0 isnt being replaced, its evolving to keep up with the times (much like the 6.9 to idi to powerstroke).
Both the 7.3 and 6.0 were killed because of emissions.
Most of the 6.0's problems seemed to be with the EGR system and the variable geometry turbo sticking/failing. Also the head bolt problems that were made worse by tuning.
IMO-A high mileage 6.0 might be a better buy than a low mileage 6.0. Hopefully, the extra miles meant more time at operating temp and burning off or not even building up of crap in the engine from the EGR.
But in any case you have to balance that with the fact that it's still a high mileage truck, no matter what's under the hood.
I have 105000 on my 03 with only a bad fuel pump (at 95000) to show for repairs. I also did not get the flash de jure in the beginning, I waited until the great state of California forced me to get a mileage robbing flash in order to renew my registration (they are requiring another to get my current reg.) But the performance is still better than my friends many 7.3's. And mine is one of the dreaded early 03's that is supposed to have injector problems and all sorts of oil leaks etc. Sometimes a good engine is just one that is well maintained......or you just get lucky.
