high mileage

how many of you have over 150,000 and more and what if any problems are you having/had? I drive about 100,000 a year and am a little afraid of the 6.0's was thinking about staying with another 7.3, but like an 02' thanks, dale

My truck only has 45,900 miles, but the engine I am currently using now has 179,350 miles on it. It had about 155,000 on it when I started running it...It has had good maintenance throughout its history judging by the condition of the truck it came out of, and according to the OASIS report it has never had any work other than a replaced ICP sensor at 9,300 miles.

Runs like its brand new- it is a little cold-natured from the top end of the injectors being a little cruddy from soot, but once its warmed up a bit it runs great.

I've been running Motorcraft 5w-50 full synthetic (designed for the Ford GT) since it no longer has an operational EGR system and the crankcase ventiliation is open- it helped with the cold start and cold operation quite a bit.

As far as wear is concerned, I checked crank endplay and the compression of each cylinder before I installed it 2 months ago. Compression is still within specification of a new engine, and crank endplay is actually on the low end of tolerance, so wear is minimal.

interesting, it seems safe to conclude that these engine will be able to go 500,000 miles under the right conditions.

Yes.

I think you'll find that the solid 6.0's will begin to outlive their 7.3 counterparts as time goes on, and most people are well aware of the lifespan of that engine.

the 6.0 short block is a awesome engine. it takes alot of abuse, and even alot of egts before it thinks about meltdown. the undoing is the emission parts and wiring.

You really can't compare the 6.0 to the 7.3. Mostly because the 6.0 has already outlived it's usefulness and it has been replaced by the 6.4(version of 6.0 but not the same). The 6.0 was a horrible design for reliability and durability. There are engines out there that are great but they are among the few. We have three of them, and two of them have issues and the third is too new to really gauge. one modified and the other stock. Two out of three trucks are bad??? Never had an issue with the 7.3 and beat the heck out of it.

Yes it has, just as the 7.3 outlived its usefulness back in 2003

i guessing that your 7.3 is not a model from the first few years they were producing it. you cannot make a fair comparison because i have heard many stories of 7.3 problems that seem all forgotten by now.

the 7.3 psd was around for 10 years from 1994 to 2003 the 6.0 psd was only used for 5 from 2003 to 2007 do the math.

And I know of no wide spread problems with the older 7.3's. My uncle had a 95' f-350 drw that he put over 600,000 with no problem what so ever. And I had a 96' that I put over 360,000 on with only fluid and filter changes.

I remember the early 7.3's and they were bad but the motor also lasted more than 3 years before Ford produced something new. Changing the motor out in 3 short years instead of fixing the issues in it is really what I was referring to and I won't even mention the differences in the 6.0 based on which month you bought your truck in let alone the changes from year to year including the baloney story of the commonization effort to the 6.4 so they can put a bigger head and bolts to address the issue of headgaskets. The whole motor and Ford's unwillingness to admit partial fault is a joke in my opinion which doesn't really matter much. I love my truck even though it is a turd.

Actually, the 6.0 had a five year run. Still kind of a short run for an engine though.
