ok, wasn't sure if I should put this here or the forced induction forum, move if need be..
I searched this forum and came up with very little.. there was a couple of posts in the other forum, but not much really.
Has anyone done a turbo setup with a 351m? With their low compression it seems like they could be a good candidate for forced induction. How about the internals, do you think they would hold up to a moderate amount of boost? say .. 7-8psi? What do you think about those STS universal remote mount systems..? it seems like this would be a good application for one of those kits.
Not really sure what I want to do with this slug of an engine at this point, just kicking ideas around, so lemme know what you think.
"Watch the Matt and Buzz install a towing package on an STS Turbocharged 5.3L Chevy Pickup and crank up the horsepower and torque on Truck Universe coming December 9th and 15th at 10:30am EST on SPEED Channel." http://www.ststurbo.com/universal_system
that's an excellent idea, lots of room under a truck. you'l need a boost referencing ignition retard system and/or knock sensor though, and run pump premium for sure.
have thought the idea myself but haven't put any effort into being serious about it. stock compression would be about right for turbo applications as far as getting more boost. i'm not a total expert but i think without upgrading to heads with a better quench area you'd be very prone to detonation. even at 6-7 psi.
I'm sure if installed properly the STS would perfprm just fine however air cleaner location kinda sucks. the underside of my truck gets painted with mud when i play. could pipe it to the engine bay but i think that would make the turbo less efficient. A decent rebuild with higher compression/cam/headers/4 barrel intake and carb would be the most practical. I like turbo's however IMHO don't think they go well in a 4x4 unless you're buildn a mud dragster. compensating and overcompensating for turbo lag in some 4 wheeling situations would potentially screw ya. On a side note if your idea of 4 wheelin is foot to the floor non stop action then do turbo lol.
I also doubt the low compression pistons are forged. If I were building a turbo motor, I would definitly want forged pistons. Maybe Tims Hyper pistons made for Aussie heads, but used with open chamber 351M heads would work well, but still with low boost.
I'm almost positive thats how single turbo setups work.. maybe i'm wrong though. I bid up to 85, but whoever else bid on it must've set his max bid up there pretty high. I don't want it that bad.
