I have just returned an Edelbrock 1406 to my truck. Does the dist. vac. advance tube connect to the passenger side or drivers side vac. port on the carb? I have no idea where the papers that came with it are now.
Symptoms of a bad acclerator pump: usually the truck will gag when you goose it to move off from a stop.
You may want to do this check with the engine cold, to avoid burning yourself. If it sits until it gets cold, gas may percolate out of the carb, and give a false reading in the next step. Hence, run it for a few seconds, just enough to get the carb filled with gas.
You will also need to have the choke open. If it is electric, run it for a bit longer, then shut the eninge down. Turn the ignition back on, and let the electric element heat the choke open.
Check it like this: Run the engine for a few seconds, to make sure the carb is full of gas.
With the engine off, remove the air cleaner and look down into the throat of the carb.
While looking down, goose the acclerator linkage several times, all the way to full throtte.
If the accelerator pump is good, you will see two streams of gas squirt down into the carb.
If it bad or poor, you may see only drops or droplets, or nothing at all.
Went out to drive the truck yesterday got 1/2 block and ran out of gas.
I hadn't done any adjusting and it worked better when it got up to operating temp, but didn't want to take off from idle. This morning I couldn't get it to crank early on. I moved the linkage on the A pump from the end to the third hole. It takes off better but sitting at a traffic light it will load up and not want to take off. The last time at the light I put it in neutral and it idled much better.
Hopefully I will get the hose off from the carb and check out the fuel flow from the pump.
put your hand over the airhorn while the truck is running. If it revs higher then you have a vacuum leak,if it bogs down then it may be too rich. Also check that your vac advance is working.spray starting fluid around the base of the carb and linkage to check for external leaks. Are you getting a "GOOD" squirt of fuel from the carb down the ventuis? You may have a baad accelerator pump.
