I'm just curious to see what tuning others have had to do to their 1406 to get the right A/F ratio. I have a 351W with E7TE heads, Performer intake, mild Crane cam, MAC headers & dual exhaust, and I had to swap 1 stage lean rods & jets to clean up my spark plugs and improve gas mileage.
Just adjust each scew to the highest vacuum. In to lean, out to go rich. Do each one idependant of each other. Simple. Even changing metering rods should not effect the idle mixture.
Do you have the Edelbrock manual? I have a 1406 on my 78 F150 4x4 400 rebuilt using Edelbrocks Power Package. I had a mechanic install a new one after the one I bought @ Summit had an internal vacuum leak. He installed .098 jets (primary), .092 jets (secondary), 75 x 47 rods and the stock springs (I think). It was pretty good, but I could smell gas, and after talking with Van @ Edelbrock, he recommended 73 x 47 rods with .095 jets (.092 sec. and the silver springs) for my setup and altitude (4500 feet). I will likely go back to the .098 jets as I put a spacer 'neath the carb and it seems to be a bit starved for gas.
I'd recommend finding a reputable speed shop or mechanic and have them adjust the carb with a gas analyzer...or...contact Edelbrock support and ask the the question. Who better to know about a product than the manufacturer! Good luck.
