Transfre Case Fluid

I need to change my transfer case fluid and I just wanted to double check the type and quantity of fluid to use. (Mercon/Dextron III)? Is this easy to do? I do my own oil/fuel/air filters and don't want to spent $79 if I don't have to. I apologize if this question has already been answered.

Mercon it is. But Mobil 1 synthetic ATF is a good investment (only 2 quarts). Amsoil ATF is an option too. Very easy to do.

Does the synthetic come in different weights or just one.

So I guess this means that we don't have to use the Mercon SP in the transfer case too? That's nice since that stuff isn't cheap.

Mercon SP is NOT good for your transfer case. It is too thin and not the correct spec. Just use Mercon fluid as required.

I use Royal Purple SynchroMax. It is a synthetic fluid made specifically for manual transmissions and transfer cases.

2 quarts is all you need, but bear in mind your power steering calls for the same spec as your transfer case, so a few extra bottles won't hurt. I have synthetic ATF in mine (except for tranny - Mercon SP there).
