we left town today to go for a drive after 10 minutes the service engine soon light came on and it is idling very rough thought maybe the gas cap was off but its fine it seems to be have a miss fire to it maybe need help just went to crap all of a sudden was running good the bam got the light and went to crap
well i know its not the plugs or wires both where done at 105,000 went to take it to the dealer and it died 1 block from the house and now won't start hell it won't even crank over so i am starting to think it lost a timing chain and locked everything up.
Well heres the deal the timing chain broke and caused the valve and piston to meet broke a rod, but heres the kicker 4500 + labor for a reman from ford. Dam thing only had 122,000 miles this is the only engine I have faithfully followed all factory service intervuls on and it only went 122,000. My 1993 4.0 had 278,000 and was abused in every way and other than a cracked head never had a problem.
Over priced sohc engines suck, glad my 1998 has the pushrods.
So what am I doing having a used engine from another with 45,000 miles installed it was 1100+ labor. Kids are glad they just got moved up to an 2002 Explorer. And yes The wife wants another Explorer so lets hope the 2007 lasts longer.
On the bright side it was nice that the engine blew 100 yards from the house.
i may be complaining but after so many good rangers and explorers just dissappointed in this engine
1992 ranger sold at 235,000
1993 ranger sold at 278,000
1994 explorer sold at 184,000
1997 explorer 220,000 traded in on monday
1998 ranger 121,000 as of today
2002 explorer 122,500 as of sunday
2007 explorer 42 as of monday night
My 1998 Explorer with the 4.0 SOHC 118,000 miles. It has just lost the jackshaft tensioner and the camshaft cassettes. They broke into pieces and the motor jumped timing. When I did a compression test it was low but it would hold pressure for more than two hours. When I called the dealer for parts I told him I did not think there was any positon or valve damage because cylinders would hold pressure. He said that there should not be any damage because that motor is what he called a "run through motor".
Just curious does anybody know if there is a difference between the 2002 and 1998 4.0 SOHC motors?
You do have the SOHC motor correct?
BTW I think that is a good price for a motor with only 40,000 miles. One yard told me $1600 for one with 90,000. Another yard had one with 75,000 miles for $975. The parts store sells long blocks for $2100.
Well I am not sure about the differences but i know the #5 plug was was smashed to peices and the cap on side the block was pushed out. Looks brutal but hey I can't wait to tear it down and see what happened. First sohc i've tore into lol it will be good for the boys to tear it down, we did heads on a ranger last year and the did a ohv engine in a ranger that was hydro locked have a 12 year old that's ready for WYOTECH. He's mad because I am letting the dealer do it and not us.
I think the rod broke first thet shoved into the valve after it turned but not sure will tell you next week when we tear it down and find the cause of failure
I am tearing mine out this weekend. Going to replace the gears, chains, cassette and tensioners myself. Just wanted to be sure that I have no valve and/or positon damage before I go and buy the parts.
