another tranny inquiry

1999 Explorer 4x4.
This just started Saturday. When driving just before shifting into another gear it will rev about a 1000 RPM for an instant then shift and drop to normal. This only happens when I am just driving normally from a stopped position. I had to give a bit more gas this morning on my way to work and it did not happen? Then a block or 2 from work my O/D off light began flashing constantly. I have not had anytime to crawl underneath this thing to do a visual check, but I am wondering if anyone has seen or heard of this problem and fixed it without a new tranny. Thanks for looking and i appreciate any help that is given.

*edit* I just found the post by EricW. closely about the same issue and getting the codes pulled today. but any other insites are still appreciated

sounds like a shift flare, when was the last ime you changed the fluids. Commonly caused by sticky shift solonoid or a leaky valve plate/gasket.

Low fluid level with cause a flare as well, will burn clutch plates as well.

Keep an eye on that level and if it goes down again you need to find out where it is going.

Well got all the fluids and filters changed and flare is still there. Went and had free estimate done at tranny shop and had codes pulled. They didn't give them to me since was just a free estimate. Long story short they're sure that Third gear is shot and needs to be inspected visually. So the tranny needs to be pulled out of there to fix that forsure and then they can visually inspect the rest. All this for 1200 - 2500 bucks.

most of the trans ive done in the dealer came in with a third gear incorrect ratio all it took was a new valve body.most have been50 to 85 k.the only other thing could be a worn servo bore which would require a tear down and install a servo bore bushing for the od and intermediate servos.
