I just replaced the tranny fluid and filter in my 95 limited with 170,000 miles. I replaced all the fluid, and it looked as if it had never been changed before. All seemed well, untill a 200 mile trip when it started doing this thing where it would rev up about 400rpm for a few seconds, then go back to normal. It would do this on a sporadic cycle. Everything else was normal, it seemed to shift fine. Then after driving at 80mph for a few minutes, the problem stopped, and on the return trip a week later, the tranny worked fine. Up until today, when I noticed it doing it again. It is definitely not downshifting causing the increased rpm, it seems like the torque converter that's doing it. My question is why would this happen right after changing the fluid/filter? And why would the problem stop then return? And most important, what do I do to fix it without a rebuild?? The only thing I am concerned about, is that I used that Maxlife tranny fluid, the stuff for high mileage vehicles. It says it's designed to be used in just about any transmission, but perhaps I should have used a different kind of fluid? Maybe another fluid/ filter change would help? Any ideas or experiences would be greatly appreciated!
Aloha from Hawaii. I have a 1995 Explorer XLT. As I write this it is in the shop. I have been having a very unusual problem with my transmission as well. The truck has about 70,000 miles on it and when I am driving along at speed all of a sudden it will go out of gear, I take off the gas and then it goes back into gear and I can then resume driving. This happens when the engine is cold or hot. Fluid is ok. The Ford Agency cannot isolate the problem. I think it is something electical or in the computer. It happens now and then, some days not at all. My wife's brother in law builds race cars in california and he said try to stop and restart the engine when it happens. I have, somethimes that solves the problem and other times it doesen't.
I had a similar problem with my '97 Explorer Sport (150,000 mi) this past year. The rpms would just jump on occasion. I also had the transmission warning light come on (the O/D Off light flashes) and the code was for the TCC solenoid. AAMCO recommended a tranny rebuild...I wasn't convinced.
I replaced the TCC solenoid myself and haven't had problems with the transmission since. I've taken it on a few longer trips (200-400 miles) and have probably driven 10-15K with the new solenoid. I did the solenoid myself, not too tough if you are familiar with engines at all. I use AllData for the step by step instructions on repairs, it is pretty comprehensive, but other manuals might work as well.
The solenoid might not be your problem, but the symptoms sound close, so it might be worth a try. Good luck and keep me posted.
