In September I bought a SD250 with a 5.4L and was very disappointed in performance of the engine. I am looking to trade it in for the exact same truck but with a diesel for the power plant. The dealer says "No Problem", but it's going to cost me $10,000. What do you think? Am I stuck or does this sound resonable?
You gotta figure you lost $3000-$5000 when you drove that truck off the lot if it was new.?
And yes diesels are close to $5000 more than a 5.4.
So the dealer anit gonna give you what you paid for it, plus the price increase of the 6.0
I just checked my v/m. its a 350 everything else is the duplicate of my truck.Ive also put 3500 miles on it.i kind of figured it wasn't going to be cheap.just that when i asked what it was going to cost an even 10k came out of the salesmans mouth.i thought id ask ,if thats what it costs than thats what it costs.just didnt know if there was wiggle room.
what kind of mpg u gettin with th 5.4? I am curious to see the mpg diffence and the price difference to see if it worth the deisel just to tow my camper in the summer.?
try a $600 V10 option! to stay with gas power plant go V10! i still don't see why they don't offer the V10's and PSD's standard.........them make a 5.4 "special order" option! i've talked to, and heard alot of diapointed 5.4 owners (in SD's that is)! and your 5.4 probably gets about the same MPG that a V10 will/does, but a 10er will have the power you want! and heck it's an extra $600..........you can't add $600 to a 5.4 and get the same torque that a V10 has!
if a PSD (at a whopping $5K) don't fit your budget, or needs and your wanting to stay with gas..........go V10!!
The new 5.4 has something like 300 hp I think, granted torque numbers don't compare to a PSD. I had a 99 5.4 and thought it was underpowered but ok for light duty use (running empty or with light loads). It plowed very well with a 7 foot Fisher. I have a 2006 PSD now and love the power but I wouldn't take a hit like that unless I was towing heavy a LOT. That is a lot of green.
IMHO...they are trying to take advantage of you. You said the 5.4L and the 6.0L PSD are both '06??? Heck...go with an '07 for that $10g PRICE rack!
But seriously...you need to sit down and work both SD's separate. Get the price of the 6.0L PSD...and then work on the trade value of your 5.4L. For a sales person to just blurt out $10g's...well he is talking out the wrong end!
Dollars and cents? Probably not, but I did it. I made the mistake of buying an 04 F250 w/ the 5.4. Great truck w/ exception to the under powered 5.4. One year later I bought the 05 w/ a 6.0. I haven't stopped smiling since... Incidentally, I drove it off the lot for about $31.5k. $43+k sticker.

I'd probably chip it, change the exhaust, and air filter. If it still didn't meet expectations, trade. That is, if you really want a diesel. I think it is worth the 600-700 experiment.
I'd be surprised if the diesel has much more acceleration although it will tow better under a load.
No disrespect intended Jimh, but don't waste your money on chips and intakes. I chipped mine and put a nice intake on it praying for a difference. Natta... It continually downshifted at least once and sometimes multiple times on highway inclines even empty. Around town it was ok.
If anyone DOES want to try a chip, I have a Diablo Delta chip w/ a three position switch (Stock, Econ & Perf.) for an 04 w/ the 5.4 & auto I'll sell cheap.
