1993 explorer transmission problems

Hi guys and gals,i have a 93 explorer and i think the transmission(A4LD) is about to go. When i go it redlines in 1st gear and wont shift into second until i stop,and put it in park then reverse then put it back into drive,then it will shift real hard into second,all the rest of the gears are shifting hard and at a higher rpm then usual,and ive 100% lost overdrive. I dropped the pan today and changed the filter,there was about a half inch peice of metal just floating around in there and the fluid was a godawful color. I changed the filter and gasket,flushed out the trans and filled it up again and its still doing the same thing,maybe shifting a tad smooth but everything is the same. Any idea if its about to explode? Or what the problem might be?

I have a 94 and it was starting to slip and shift hard. Needed a rebuild. From what I hear, 140K is about the life expectancy of the A4LD.

Good luck. Mine was $1500.
