Speedometer/Odometer and Cab lights

Hey all--I recently developed a problem on my 1995 Ford F150.

I was towing my boat with the trailer lights hooked up (not sure if related, but thought I'd throw it in there) and I noticed my speedometer wasn't working.

At the next stop I checked my fuse, and ya it was blown. I replaced it, and it started working fine for the rest of the trip.

Fast forward a couple months (don't drive the truck that often btw--it's my utility/tower) ... get int he truck and the speedometer isn't working again.

Of course, I check the fuse... and they're all good. I notice the cab lights don't work either. However, when I come to a stop and turn my ignition off the cab lights come on. I turn the key over to ACC and it turns off. Odd stuff.

Over a year ago, I replaced the steering column with a 1994 model... then 6 months after that I was getting a blinking airbag light. I replaced the clockspring (which fixed it) .... Also not sure if related, but threw it in there.

Any ideas?

This is kinda general info, so I'm sorry in advance for not being able to be more specific...but if your truck is eating fuses like candy, there's most likely a short to ground in one of your wires. Sounds like it's time to break out your multimeter and start looking under the dash (and under the truck itself...your speedometer is driven off the VSS in the rear axle) for some bad wiring.

I suck at fixing wiring gremlins...hopefully someone more patient and experienced than me can be more specific!

I used to drive a 96-250 powerstroke service truck that carried 55gal drums. when they rocked up against the cab they would bust the 3rd brake light/load bed light & the first time it rained or the truck got washed (which was often), Boom- fuse blew, speedo stopped working-overdrive light flashed-shifting got wonky. New lens & gasket & fuse was the only long term repair. Might give that area a look.
