odometer speedometer quit. No shifting from low

Thanks in advance for any help.

In another thread I mentioned that I took my dash apart to replace all of the bulbs and I still don't have the wait to start light. I'm working on it.

Now I have another issue that is most likely related in some way. When I put the connectors all back in place before bolting the dash back in, I checked to see that all of the lamps worked. The ones that were supposed to light were lit (except for the ones in the diesel panel to the right of the main panel and also the airbag light (that's another story)). I'm sure that the odometer was working at that point. After I bolted it all back in the odometer is not working and when I drive the truck the speedometer isn't working and the trans. won't shift out of low. Crap! This thing only has 142k on it, I don't want to lose that!

In the interest of full disclosure, I didn't disconnect the batteries while doing the work and at a couple of points in the removal and install I had to turn the key switch on to move the shifter down into low. I know, not too smart. Too late now.

From researching the issue on this site and others, It seems like the problem could be related to the VSS in the rear and/or the speedometer/odometer module in the dash (seems more likely to me). I guess it could also be in the wiring or connectors. Although, I tore the dash back apart to check those things and didn't see anything obvious.

Any thoughts on what the problem is? What other info. can I give you guys to help me troubleshoot this?

Definetly replace the VSS as it is a cheap fix,the psom (Programmable speedometer odometer module) wouldn't influence the trans. It relies for power (KAP) keep alive power from the pcm that is actually from the batteries.I've torn out dashes and reinstalled complete dash harnesses and agree that all your harness connections should be reinspected as something might have pulled loose. Also possible to find a schematic and trace for wire continuity from the dash to the VSS pigtail with KOEO.Also would be good to bypass the neutral safety switch and the wiring is above the accelerator pedal.

I took it all back apart, checked the connections etc. Put it back together and now it's working. Didn't find anything obvious until I checked the fuse again. It was blown. I know I checked it before but I'm not sure when. Anyway, it's fixed now.

Thanks for everyones input.

I still don't have the "wait to start" light. I've got the 12v coming into and out of the bulb circuit but it's not getting the ground it needs in order to light up. I'm certain that the glow plugs are working properly though so I'm not going to sweat it.

Thanks again, Karl

FYI, working on the dash without disconnecting the batteries shouldn't hurt a darn thing, I wouldn't worry about that if you end up tearing into it again.

Disconnecting the PSOM connector with the batteries connected and the key in RUN certainly could hurt something. That's probably how you blew the fuse. Yes, it "did its job", but I sure wouldn't count on that.

And I'm pretty sure the PSOM DOES influence the tranny. The VSS feeds the PSOM directly, but I believe it doesn't feed the PCM directly, so if the PSOM is disconnected or malfunctioning, it won't send a signal to the PCM.
