Has anyone had a problem with their speedometer not working?
I have a 2005 F250 4x4 6.0L CC with 200 miles on it. I was coming out of the woods with a load of firewood and the truck was in 4x4. All was well and when I reached the highway, I shifted into 4x2 and started up the road. I looked down at the dash and noticed that the speedometer wasn't working. I pulled over, shifted into 4x4 and back to 4x2 but this had no effect. Then, thinking that the speedometer is all computer driven now, I turned the key off to reboot the computer. I started the truck up again and the speedometer has been fine ever since.
Was this just a fluke or can I expect the speedometer to die again?
you may want to check the speed sensor pick up, it should be located near the rear of the trans, make sure any of the plugs are not loose.
nice part is the truck has a warranty for these little bumps in the road.

It happens quite often with 4WD's that have the speed sensor in such a location as the Super Duty.

Just going by this you could have hung a root or a stick that wedged against the VSS sensor connection (as Crash referred to) and could have slightly loosened it up and could have allowed a piece of bark or even a rock inside. The debris doesn't have to get all the way into the conector, but just enough to prohibit contact. Then a little normal vibration from the road, etc., could have jarred it loose allowing the connector to seat just enough to make contact. I would unplug the connector and spray it good with an electronics cleaner and plug it back up - ensuring that it seated all the way down.
The VSS is located on top of the diff - driver's side.

Just happens sometimes and if you get into loose gravel, roots or sticks it can happen again.

If the speed sensor is on the left rear of the trans...then what is the switch on the rear end for? I have a speedo that quit and the odo and trip still work.....i have the sensor on the side of the trans and also one on the rear end..which one should I be concerned with? WONDERING?...thanks
