I own a 2002 explorer and recently I have noticed a sound whenever I go over a speed bump or even a bump. Is this definately the shocks???? or could it be something else>??>? And if it is the shocks can I just get the front ones done or should you do all 4???? And approximately how much am I looking @ in $$$???
I bought it with 100000kms and it now has 120000kms if that helps you>?
thanks a lot for your ansewrs?
What does the noise sound like? Is it a thump, rattle, squeak or something else?
Worn shocks might make a squeaking noise, or no noise at all. A thumping or clunking sound (like metal on metal) could be caused by loose shock mounting bolts - or by many other suspension components. If you vigorously rock the front end at each corner, do you hear the sound? If you do, try to locate where it's coming from.
When you stop rocking the truck, it should bounce no more than once before coming to rest. If it takes a couple of bounces to stop, the shocks are worn and should be replaced.
When you bought the rig, did you get any service records? If the shocks are original, then yeah - after 120,000 klicks, they need to be replaced whether or not they're causing this noise. I'd replace all four. If you buy the parts and do it yourself, you're probably looking at a couple hundred bucks (US), more or less depending on which ones you buy. Having a shop do it might set you back twice that.
thanks a lot for the reply Kevin. It is a squeak but it now happens on just a little hump in the road but not so much on a big hump.??? To add to my bad luck I just got in a fender bender and I need a new bumper but I have a crack also on the chrome peice around the grill,. Now if anyone knows if the grill and the outline trim(chrome piece)are one piece or do I have to buy a whole other unit??(brush gaurd???? I got a qoute on a bumper for 300$ cad. and a chrome grill for 160$. Can anyone help me out?? Also what shock is better Monroe or Rancho???? thanks a lot guys, I appreciate your replies!
Could also be a bad ball joint in one of your A arms... its a problem a lot of the Ford trucks have had... if you were just in an accident it could have helped to bring it to an even more premature death, try goin to the dealer and see if there isnt a recall or service thing for the ball joints on your year and you might be able to get em changed for free. Not sure but its worth a shot to find out.

noise over speed bumps could also be caused by sway arm bushings .. mine creaks all the time over speed bumps and I have tracked it down to those bushings being a little dry
I just replaced 4 shocks on my 02 XLT (at 195K) with KYB's. They are OK but in retrospect I think I would have bought something a little stiffer
thanks for the help guys, I just got my truck in to a body shop to repair the bumper(1200$cad) so I am waiting to get it back to see what I can do with it???How hard is it to get the bushings off??? the sound really does sound like a bushing squeaking.(plastic on metal)I was told the two front ball joints were replaced when I bought it, but it wont surprise me if it is a bad ball joint knowin my luck. I was reading that if you get the bushing off you can put anti-sieze on it and its brand new. or if it is bad just replace it. Can someone like me who is not that mechanicaly inclined do it>?>>???if not how much is it to get a mechanic to replace??? I got an estimate for 534$cad. for 4 monroe reflex shocks installed. How does that sound and is that a good shock????Is monroe any good????Is there a better monroe shock like the sensa trac??? any comments would help me a lot as I am just throwin money out my pocket!
