I was just in Canadian Tire and they said I need struts not shocks as my suspension is independant but they qouted me 540$ for Monroe sensa-trac shocks. So I go to pick up my truck and they give me this story and tell me its 2000$ and that my suspension looks fine. Is that a joke or what?? So I guess Ill be keepin my money where it is, they told me to get a front end inspection from ford to see what is really goin on. But I know there is nothin wrong aside from the bumps and rattles. I got the truck with 100 000kms and now there is 125 000kms and the ride quality is gone to crap. Is there anything that I should do or can do to improve the ride without spendin that kinda $$$???? Should I get them replaced or ride it out longer???? would an inspection be worth my time or would they just tell me they need replaced???? If someone could explain this to me that would help me out a lot. As I think the next explorer I buy will be a 2001 non IRS suspension!
I had my '98 Explorer front shocks replaced for $150.00 US dollars at Good Year tire. Then, I went to Advanced Auto parts to find the parts to replace the broken/missing rubber gaskets on the stabilizer bar and the rubber gaskets that supported the shocks. My truck rattled everytime I drove over cobble stone or bump in the road. 1998 Ford Explorer Eddie Bauer stock V6 4.0 SOHC 4x2. I'm not sure if I have independent suspension, however see if you can save $$$$ by doing it yourself.
This is a quote from MazdaRangerGuy in the thread Installing New Shocks: "You only need a compression tool to install struts.. not shocks. Your explorer is equipped with only shocks, therefore it's a simple bolt off and on deal".
Sounds like you need to find a suspension/tire place whose people know what they're talking about.
