You can go to this site, www.agt.net/public/bboogaar/engine_colour_list.htm and it shows all the colors for the flatheads from 1932-1953. According to the charts, the 48's were a dark Ford Blue. It's a great chart showing alot of work that it took to compile. I keep it in my favorites list (AOL).
Good luck on your restoration. I just finished painting my f-1 motor this past fall. I hate to disagree but I did lots of research and determined that the early 48's were painted a LIGHT ford blue. The remaining 48's up until the early 50's were actually painted a dark red, perhaps a medium green in 52 and then back to the traditional ford blue that we know. If you go to a parts store you can get various colors of Ford Blue. I got my LIGHT ford blue from Obsolete Ford Parts........ Don't mean to get you all confused now... Send me your email and I'll send pictures of my motor and truck. jim

My truck is a early 1950 F-1 and I could tell by the 8RT heads, that they were a goldish color. I painted them the Bronze color. I got it from Bill Hirsch in N.J. I've ripped apart a bunch of these from 48-52 and I've yet to see any that were any shade of blue. most of them had the paint burned off or rusted off years of neglect. I worked for 20 years as a Ford parts manager and there's very little info in Ford parts books on engine colors. They list the paints, but no reference to what went on what years. I'd say paint it whatever color floats your boat.It beats rust color! I like the bronze, so that's what I used.
The light shade of blue is only for the early production models in 1948. The red should be standard for the rest. I believe that the 8 cylinders might of had a goldish color...heard of it, never seen it though. jim
Hello, I have a 55F100 and the engine was yellow, is this original? I have not yet found anyone who knows for sure and is there a website like the one mentioned earlier that covers this year? Scott
