I just finished wiring my '58 f-100. when I went to start it last night, it just stumbled and sputtered and blew fire out of the carb. It seems like the timing is off now, even though I never messed with it.
Is this possible?
Thanks for the input,

T. Goodwin

Verify you have the correct voltage on the plus side of the coil when the key is on and while it is cranking. If this checks, there must be something else going on. Are you changing from 6v to 12v?

I'll check that. No I just replaced the wiring with an aftermarket loom, the old stuff was pretty crispy.

Sounds like maybe you got the firing order mixed up when you changed the wires. That'll do it, basically you are "changing the timing" on a cylinder or two, and have a wide open intake valve when the plug fires. It makes for some exciting fireworks, as you describe. Been there, done that, that's how I know. Lose any eyebrows?

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 05-Jan-02 AT 11:03 AM (EST)]If the above don't cure it, check the distributor. Maybe its rotated a little.

And if that dosen't fix it, start at the beginning and go wire by wire and find the one that is hooked up wrong. But start with the s plug wires.

sorry guys, I thought I had posted my solution, but I guess I hadn't.
I had the coil wire hooked to the starter terminal of the starter solenoid. I saw it as soon as I opened my eyes . The moral to this story... Don't work on your truck when you're tired, you only tend to make stupid mistakes. I can't tell you how many times I've removed my seat and put it back in simply because I was preoccupied with another project in a completely different part of the truck. I sound like a real looser now HUH?
