ihave a '99 150 still don't have the owner's manual. but i was just curious if these trucks have a sensor when theres a certain amount of weight in the back that turns over drive off automaticaly
it happened again today I put 2 yardsof mulch in the bed and got in the truck and the o/d off light was on. Could this be an aftermarket upgrade or just an odd coincidence? this happens everytime i put about a 1,000lbs. or more in the bed
No. There is a button on the end of the shifter where you can lock OD out. For when you are towing, hauling heavy loads, driving around town or through a lot of hills where your transmission would be shifting constantly. Shifting = heat = dead transmission.
I NEVER use overdrive in my truck unless Im running 65+ MPH on a flat road for long distances.
It did it again this morning. went to the localmulch yard to pick up a load of mulch got out of the truck and left it running and made sure o/d was still on. got the mulch dumped about 1200lbs. came back and the o/d was off. it only happens when i have a fairly heavy load. i would turn it off anyway but im just curious, could this be an aftermarket instal or something that may have come from the factory. or just a coincidence
No...there is no such thing as a device that turns OD off with a certian ammount of weight in the bed.
It sounds to me like the wire is getting pinched, pulled, or moved in some way when you shift into gear. Leave the OD off and shift through the gears (while sitting in your driveway) and see if the light comes on or not. I am betting that there is something up with the connection or the wire in the steering column.
there are devices that can manipulate OD function. I know for a fact there is a device to reverse the setting for OD on automatically on startup, basically all it does is pulse 12v to the computer (pulses ground on GM's I think) and turns on the OD override when the truck starts. You could easily fasion a simple circut or switch to do this manually via how much weight was in the back.
But you would have to be a serious nutball to do this I guess you can take a look yourself at the leaf springs
thanks for the input. i was just curious because it has only happend when there was a load on it. and i drive this truck all the time and never had o/d switch off unless there was a signifcant amount of wieght in the back

so anytime you're driving your pickup and towing anything, doing stop and go, and any hills you lock it out? just keep normal on the highway? anyone else do this?
