i was out tonite with a hole bunch of my buds and i took out my truck like i always do. well i went with a few buds to get slurpies from shell. on the way back one of them asks me 1000 times if he can drive my truck. finally i give in and say around the block. that's it. he drives it has fun and parks it at his driveway. 1 hour later he wants to again. here we go again. fine lets go. around the block, turned out to be around 4 blocks. but fine. i trust these guys. well this guy tells another bud of mine (theres like 10 of us here) and he wants to drive it! it's 1 am! i wanna go to sleep! i give in finally and say around the block. hell he drove that truck like he had done it for years. the first guy was a little iffy.
have you ever let your buds drive your truck while u sit next to them? is this a bad thing im doin?
I've let people drive mine but only in a parking lot. My truck is a standard, all my friends have standards. So I trust them not to do something stupid. They let me drive their cars too. It depends on who asks. I don't like to let my dad drive, he's been driving standard for years but I don't like the way he does it. When I am slowing down from any gear except 1-2 I will put it into neutral and coast/brake to a stop. My dad tells me I shouldn't do that because you're using more brake then you have to. But I say, in 3rd-4th-5th gear the engine can hardly slow you down so whats the point of using the extra gas? My dad will downshift through all the gears when he has time to slowly come to a stop. Not only is it burning my clutch everytime he downshifts, but it's using extra fuel because instead of running at idle it's running at 2,000+rpm. Who cares about a couple brake pads?

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 16-Jul-02 AT 10:02 AM (EST)]I let my girlfriend drive my truck once, and she was freaked out.
I'll let my mom drive it too, she didn't like it at first but now she loves driving it. I'm too nervous to let ANY of my friends drive it, parents I don't mind, I was scared out of my mind when my girlfriend was driving it.
I bought my Excursion because I totalled my Dually when I was in Michigans western U.P., near Wisconsin, on a snowmobile trip. 3 days after picking it up, I had to go back up north (with the wife and 2 kids) to get my belongings, trailer, sleds, etc. About 4 hours into the drive, I started getting a severe pain in my right leg. By the time we got to Escanaba, I had a high fever, so we stopped for the night. I went on to pick up my stuff the next morning, and when I got back to Escanaba, I went to the emergency room at the hospital next door. It turns out I developed some kind of infection in my leg. My wife had to drive back to the Detroit area, pulling a 4-place snowmobile trailer. Prior to that, the largest vehicle she had driven was an Explorer. She was petrified. I felt bad, but she did great. She refuses to drive it to this day. Noone else will ever drive it.
I try to avoid letting anyone have the opportunity to ask me to drive my truck(s). Depending on the situation, I would allow it if it's an emergency, but not just to keep from being bored.
As far as MustangGT221's comments, I have to disagree. I am now 58. I have been driving with clutch's for 44 years. I always downshift. I used to drive a 75 pinto 4 speed. I had three other adults in it when I carpooled to work. They used to constantly warn me that I should wear out my brake pads, not my clutch. Do you know in all those years I have NEVER worn out a clutch! It all depends on how you do it.
I now have a 5 spd 92 GT, and a 5 spd 91 Explorer (unfortunately all my others are automatics). When I downshift, I always hit the gas to synchronize the engine speed, never force the clutch to rev up the engine.
I first noticed how a driver leaves a "fingerprint" when my wife started driving my 68 Mustang 3 speed manual. Now, my wife loves a stick shift, actually the 92 Gt is hers. But when I came home from work in my old falcon, if I got in the Mustang to go anywhere, I could tell if she had driven it because the clutch felt different.
That's only one reason I don't like for anyone else to drive my vehicles. It's kind of like loaning your gloves or shoes to someone.
Mustang, you sure that's not my dad you're talking about? ;-) He drives exactly the same way, and every vehicle he normally drives is a stick. I rarely downshift at all to slow the truck, except when pulling a trailer. It really helps when the trailer brakes aren't that good.
I generally don't like other people to drive my truck, but I have made exceptions. The manual transmission helps keep some away.
I wouldn't even let the state inspection people drive my vehicles if I didn't have to.
My wife never drives my vehicles anymore.
Once, I let her take my 64 Pontiac to the store to get groceries. She calls 2 hrs later to tell me the car wont start, no clicks, no nothing. I get there only to find she left the trans in drive.
Another time, she backs out of the driveway to pick up the kids in the same car, she floors it and takes out a tree across the street.
A year later, we are at a friends having drinks and playing cards, she wanted to leave and I wasn't ready. She takes my 71 Cutlass all the way down the driveway (about an 1/8th mile long) stops, and then decides to drive in reverse, in the dark, while angry. Needless to say, she ruined 40 feet of barbed wire fence, punctures 3 tirs in the sidewall and removed about a foot of paint from the trunk lid.
In 95, I let her drive my 94 Ranger Splash to the store. She claims she parked way out in the parking lot and someone hit the taillight with a buggy and broke it.
Nope, never let her drive my vehicles again since 95. As for anyone else, I'd better be dead or dying before they get behind the wheel of my vehicles.
2) My friends are idiots and inexperienced drivers, much like myself.
I sometimes drive 'Big Red', my fathers truck which is a 67' F-100 Camper Special 4 speed. I don't think any of my friends could manage the clutch in it, but we will never find out.
I also drive my mothers car sometimes, an 00' Ford Focus 5 speed...I would never let someone drive it because if it were to be smashed, my parents would most likely run over my head in 'Big Red.'
And then there is the car I drive, or drove, until it broke down. No one would want to drive an 86' Toyota Cressida. Hehe.
By the way: I am new to the board, but hello. I was introduced to FTE by my father, I believe he goes by 'jor' in here, but I may be mistaken. Anyway, hello.
Thats funny, I let my friends drive my truck. Once I let my buddy drive my truck about 10km's to my house because he was at work and his truck was badly leaking gas so I took his to fix it. I let my girlfriend drive it as well because she didn't want too. She thought it was so hard to drive and would never drive it again. I think letting my friends drive my truck is a sign of respect because of the love I have for it. Of course there are limits.
