Hello all, I'm a proud owner of a 2002 F-250 7.3L! I traded for this well cared for truck in May 06 and at that time it had 115,00 miles on it(currently at 122,000). Every start cycle seems to take an unusually long time before it fires. Compared to my '99 f250 with 72,000 miles it takes about twice as long. It's a long start regardless of engine or outside temp. I've replaced the fuel filter, glow plug relay and have ensured that both batteries are tip top. Glow plug light comes on then goes out as it should(stays on a bit longer on cold days).
So my question is, is this something I should be concerned about? Is it normal for a truck with this amount of miles? I'd like to fix this if I can. I assume glow plugs are working properly, So my next guess is that it may be an injector or injector pump related problem?? Any and all comments are welcomed
after your truck sits a while, check the level in your hpop resevior. it might be slowly draining and the truck will not start until the low pressure oil pump gets oil to the resevior.
Thanks for the advice bloomy63, but please excuse my ignorance. What is and where is the hpop resevoir? If it is draining what could be done to fix it??
the hpop is the high pressure oil pump which supplies high pressure oil to drive the injectors.
the hpop resevoir is located right in front of the fuel filter bowl directly under the little plastic engine cover. the heater core hose that comes right out of the top of the waterpump is routed right over it. after you remove the cover there will be a small allen key plug in the top. remove the plug and inspect oil level. it should be about 1/2 to 1" below the top of the resivoir. if not, fill it with oil right before you start it. if it starts quickly that is the problem. there is a check valve that keeps the oil from draining out after shutdown it will probally need to be replaced.
