Tranny for a 302????

Is the ford c-4 or c-6 better for a 1977 302 with Edelbrock Performer? I am going to buy an Edelbrock 600 carb but i dont want to spend like $550 for an AOD rebuilt if it doesn't link up right. Keep hearing that the AOD is hard to link up with the 600 carb. So with that in mind, which tranny is better for gas mileage and just plain ol good cruisin???? I know the AOD is good for the highway but also I still have the original Dana 44 rearend on my 55.... HELP!!!!!!

If you are going to eventually switch the rear, go with a c4. It's small, lightweight, simple and plentiful. The c6 is big and overkill unless you are going to be hard on the truck. If you are going to keep the original rear, I would go with the aod. Here's some info on the linkage adaptation. This website has alot of info about trannies.

My '51 F1 has a stock 302 w/2 bbl motorcraft, C4 I run 2800 RPM at 60 MPG with Dana 44, 4:11.I'm told an AOD is 1/4" longer at the tranny mount, don't know about passing gear, as I've never hooked my C4 passing gear up.

I just installed an edelbrock performer and holley 600 on my 1978 302.
I am running a c4, and she purrs rather nicely. I dont know much about the c6, but everyone I've spoken to says the c4 is a decent tranny for the engine that I'm running. Sounds like we are pretty much in the same boat engine wise.

55FordLover: do you have a photo of your Dana 44 rearend you could post or email to me? I think I have one too, but am not sure. It is slightly bulgy at the left side (back) and sorta has an upside-down "V" or Chevron crinkled shape stamped into the top 1/3 of the bolt-on rear cover. I haven't found any tags or numbers on it to ID it at all yet, and I'm still wondering WHAT the heck I have!

Tranny for a 302????

Look inside your glove box, there should be a tag that showes what rear end you have if it's the stock one.
