AOD reliability

I've got an '80 F150 shortbox with a C4, 302, and a 2.73 rear gear (9inch.) I want to squeez some more performance out of this combo without changing the motor. I rebuilt the motor and put a mild cam in it. Also, it has shorty headers and an Edelbrock 289 intake and 650 4bbl carb. I don't wanna put a gear in and keep the C4 because I drive the highway with it and don't wanna run 3000 rpm's at 65mph. I had a 3.55 gear in the 9inch and loved it but I was thinking I might be able to go lower with an AOD. There are two AOD's in the paper for 120 for the pair. I was considering buying them and putting a 4.56 gear in the 9inch. I calculated the rpm's at 70 and came up with around 2600. Will the AOD hold up to some mild abuse and the 4.56? I was plannin on putting a huge cooler on the tranny. Also, where could I get a kit for the tv cable? Thanks.
