Splines
So I have read tons and tons and talked on here for a while about upgrading my 97 4x4 4.6 8.8 open rearend to a LS. Well I am looking at ordering one and putting it in over christmas break. And I have an imporant question... 28 spline or 31?
My truck has the 3.55 gear 8.8 open case.
Which one these ? I know the factory ford one is junk, seems like every other ford LS made is being worked on under the TSB. But it is made by detroit locker right? Who is owned by Eaton. So are all 3 of these the same except for the price and name?

It should be 31 spline in a truck.
The Ford Traction-Lok is a clutch type LS unit.
The Detroit Locker is a mechanical type locker
The Eaton is a stronger clutch type than the Traction-Lok.
My Mustang has 160,000 on the Traction-Lok and still spins both tires.
My 01 F150 has the 9.75" with a traction-Lok and it is nice and tight with 68,000 miles on it.

I had to buy an axle shaft for my 98 4x4 and Ford couldn't tell me if it was a 28 or 31 spline. I gave them the axle tag number, S-869 B, and the code from the door tag, H9, and all they could give me was an axle part number. Get your axle part number from Ford and go here to verify the spline count.
