swapping side gears

im looking at getting a trac loc for the rear of the truck but most of the ones for sale are 28 spline. i believe my axles are 31 spline (97 4.6 triton 8.8inch ) so if i get the 28 spline one can i use the 31 spline side gears out of my open case in the ls case?

any help will be great as im not sure that it would work

The side gears are different from an open to a trac loc diff so it won't work.

you cant take gears from a 31 trac loc and put them in a 28 spline carrier either just in case you try buying side gears from ford. check ebay , thats where i got my posi unit. 85 bucks for mine
