On the way home today, I figured I would try the 4x4 out. For a one mile stretch, I let the truck run in 4 high. I pulled into a parking lot, and tried to get it into Low. No such luck, wouldn’t budge. My biggest concern is, when the hubs are locked and I am taking a turn, there is the incredible force against the steering wheel, a uncontrollable rocking of the steering wheel back and forth. Now I know there’s going to be a lot of tension on the steering wheel when your on dry pavement, but it was at the point where I couldn’t turn the wheel because it was dragging so bad, and the wheel was jerking very hard. This violence in the turning leaves me to believe why the 4 Low wont go in, and also have a feeling the 4 high may not be working, and just the hubs are locking in. Any ideas?
Yeah I know, I was only trying it. I told ya on knew it was bad, but I am experimenting with the 4x4. I guess I will just have to see its potency when its snowing. Which to looks of it will never happen here in Maine.
I'm telling you, bring that truck over here and drop it off, I think I can manage to put up with those pesky hubs.
What you describe is completly normal for the 4wheel system. If you want to play around with it find a gravel road before you break something messing with it on the pavement. Remember to put it in neutral and step on the brake, you might also have to rock the truck around a little bit when you try to shift it. It probably wouldn't shift because if got bound up running down the highway.
