I usually run one month with hubs in, one month without, etc. I guess running with the hubs locked in uses a miniscule amount of gas more so I try to avoid doing it all the time.
Wednesday, I put the hubs in and I noticed the steering wheel doing some funny things when returning to center ... it would turn a bit, then stop, then turn, then stop.
Next, I noticed that when I turned (going down the road or in a parking lot), I could get a clunking and slight shaking. Moreso noticeable when turning left.
Finally, I realized something wasn't entirely right. I pulled over and the lug nuts were a bit lose and I unlocked the front hubs at the same time. Probably should have waited to see if the lugnuts fixed it.
Anyway, I locked them again today and it is clunking when I'm turning.
Clunks / Shakes with hubs locked in when turning
Does not with hubs locked out
I can confirm that it is not stuck in 4 wheel drive. The front end on this thing is real real rusty so it's probablyt something with that.
I don't actually service the truck, we bring it to the dealer to get service (yeah I know but if they can do it for the same price ... ) and they lube the steering arm, ball joint and some other stuff.
Didn't know the U joints were greaseable. I may try some ATF ... something lightweight ... then move on to grease.

Oh, almost forgot to add, the U-joints are the ONLY thing under there that they can grease. Everything else is sealed, so they don't bother even looking.
Do you mean the U joints on the axle or on the driveshaft? I'm thinking the ones on the axle

It rides perfect with the hubs unlocked, seems like ball joints would be all the time type of deal. My Taurus has bad ball joints and this doesn't do any of the stuff that does. Granted, slightly different suspension setup!
Needle bearings and f-d up locking hubs could very well be the problem.
I have also noticed I get a noise coming from up there too with them in.

Interesting. I'll be greasing them, then. I have about 500 tubes in the garage!
Hopefuly I can report back later on with some results!
