I just bought a cluster with a tach to put in my 93 F150, the cluster was from a 92. All gauges work except the voltage and temp. Could it be anything other that a bad gauge. Also can I swap those two gauges from orginal non-tach cluster. I know the face plates for each gauge wouldn't fit but I was thinking I could take out the back part of the gauge.
There is a difference in wiring between 92 and 93. Make sure that the pins in the two plugs are going to the right units on the cluster. I transferred one into a 93 and had to change four wires in the plugs. There are posts about this in the past.
I went to the ford dealer and researched the wiring diagrams for the two years that I had and then found where the differences were. One of them was the wire that energized the alternator. I replaced the battery and the alternator before I realized that the wires were wrong. If the little red battery indicator does not light up when the key is turned on the alternator will not be engergized when it starts. That is one point to look for.
