What's This?

Sometimes when I turn my key and wait for the glow plugs to do their thing, in addition to hearing the fuel pump pressurize there is another pump on the passenger side of the engine compartment that keeps going even after the engine has started. It sits on the passenger side fender. It looks like a vacuum pump because of the small black tubes coming off of it. Sometimes it only runs for a few seconds and sometimes it will keep running for a few minutes. What is this and what does it do? Sorry I don't have any pics of it.

It is the Vac pump, it controls the Air flow through the heat exchanger/ac system in addition to the ESOF 4X4 auto lock.

Thanks! That's what I thought. Just wanted to make sure. So if that is running continuously there is probably a leak somewhere.

If you have 4 wheel drive it also supplies the force to engage/disengage your front hubs. Very common to have broken/leaking hoses up there.

By the way, how are things in Albuquerque? I was born and raised there.

fixinair,

how funny, I was born and raised in CA. Southern CA. Things are great in Alb. nice place. Hollar at me if you are ever passing through.

I don't think I have any vac leaks, everything seems to work fine, its just some times that pump seems to work harder then other times. I just notice it pumping away if I leave the key on before I start the truck.

When I left Albuquerque I moved to San Diego. Lived there for 20 years and then moved to Bakersfield. May be driving through Albuquerque soon. I'll look you up.
