My truck has been starting hard after I shut it off and let it set for maybe 15 minutes. I have to pump the gas a few times and then sometimes hold it down to to get it to start. Have to crank it for a few seconds and then it runs just fine. Think my fuel pump in going out. Losing its prime? I've got a inline fuel filter near the carb and it will sometimes be full and then sometimes be empty. I'm thinking its losing its prime and sucking the fuel back out of the filter. It just started doing this in the last 2 weeks. Normally its a bump of the key and it fires right up. What you guys think?
I think your correct. Not knowing too much about your yr or the gas tank thats about all I can say. You may want to drop the fuel tank and tak a look in there. Be pateint and carefull removing the cap in that it can be brittle after that inspection and you dont see anything obveous I would go with the pump. But would figure a way to measure line pressure from the pump.
Normally you can not hold your finger over the discharge line very long if the pump is working fine.
Not gonna dispute what they're saying about the pump, as it could be the pump.
But, my truck had an inline filter added near the carb, and it was directly over the intake/exhaust manifold. Shutting the truck down, and raising the hood, I could actually watch the fuel boil inside the filter. Clear plastic filter, even.
Relocating the filter solved my problem.
That's a good point. Mines right above the intake and exhaust and it never started doing this till it got warm out. I'm gonna check Into moving that filter and see if that solves the problem.
Sounds like we have a match. My issues were soley under hot conditions, and engine warm. Waiting until the engine cooled off, and it would run perfectly after starting. But, try to start it within 1-1.5 hrs of shutting it off, and it ran a few seconds, dies, and would not restart without priming the carb.
During the winter months, it didn't seem to occur. I "discovered" this issue about april or may, and had bought the truck the previous oct. Might have been partly why I got it so cheap........
Well I got the new fuel pump and not gonna put it on. I got me some new fuel line and changed it and moved the inline filter. I shut the truck off popped the hood alittle and watched and sure enough I seen little bubbles in the little glass filter. When I pulled the line off of the carb inlet fuel shot out! It was pressurizing from the heat and when I went to start it, it would flood the carb. New piece of hose and a quick move of the filter and problem solved! Its down by the fuel pump now. Thanks for the help guys and thanks Rogue_Wulff for the tip on the filter!!
