Buddy's Dodge/Cummins just took a dump on him. $2800 fuel pump plus $1200 labor. I kinda razzed about what happened to that 1/2 million mile durability that diesels have...
All kidding aside, he said the Cummins dealer (not Dodge) said that the low-sulpher fuel caused the failure.
I thought the LS fuel was just for the '07 emmisions and wouldn't affect the older diesels (like my tractors and VW TDI) I also read where we have to be 100% switched over to low sulpher by 2010.....and only 20% of current pumps can carry the old blend (500 PPM).
Does low sulpher fuel cause pump failure in the older pumps???
I can only speak for my Mercedes 300D. The injector pump is lubricated by engine oil, it doesn't rely on the fuel for lubrication. So, no problem with the new fuel.
There are several discussions on this. Look for ULSD (ultra low sulfur diesel) threads. As for myself I have older farm equipment 67, 73 etc. and I have been using a B5 biodiesel for lubrication. I have had no problems. I also work for a school system ant they just started using it in the fleet of 55 buses and trucks. They have had a noticeable improvement in how the engines run, startability, less rattle, better fuel economy.
The aromatics have been decreased in ULSD but lubricity additives have maintanied the "Lube" factor in the fuel. The decreased aromatics can cause seal srinkage in older seals that have become "acustomed" to LSD fuels. http://www.chevron.com/products/prod...tb_2005Aug.pdf

Glad to see that the Cummins guys have problems too... since some seem so hell bent to bash Ford's. We have all been using low-sulfur fuel for several years... it is Ultra-Low Sulfur that just started to become available... and I think it is too soon for ULSD to have caused pump and seal issues... but I could be wrong?
