I was wondering what brands of additive people were using, for I.P. Lube because of the low sulpher diesel,(lucas, howes,CRC,????)I dont want to run ATF because weights and measures has been setting up check points for offroad diesel lately. knowing my luck they would see ATF and get me for offroad fuel lol.
where are u located that fuel checks are being done?! i use schaeffers fuel additive. it adds lubricity, has afuel system cleaner and anit/gel all in one. around $6 abottle (depending who's working the counter)LOL 1 bottle treats 125 gallons. all the tests i've looked at schaeffers is around 3rd or4th on the list off all the majors brands tested out of 15-20 different ones tested. howes isn't worth damn according to the tests. schaeffers offers good bang for your buck. quality vs. expense. just my 2 cents
Thanks for the Info on schaeffers I'm about 100 miles west of PHX, 250 miles east of LA. its Snowird season, and they are checking there diesel pushers and anything else that moves.lol
I read an article a while ago about additives (sorry no link). I don't remember the details, but I started buying opti-lube for my truck based on the tests they did.
Cornbinder-- What test rated Howes low? The one saw on this forum it was rated either one above or one below Diesel Kleen. I have used it for years, it has never given me any problems. The same test showed injectable 2 stroke oil as given one of the best rating for lubrisity. I tryed 1/2 qt. per tank and it worked great. I even picked up about a mile per gallon on fuel economy. I think the ultra low sulfer fuel now has a lubrisity package added, so it is not as much of an issue as it was when it first came out.
I have always used howes, and it has worked at 60 below, which is plenty good enough for me. two stroke oil I think is as good as any as far as lubricity goes, but I don't think it does anything for gelling.
When available, i run 1:1 ULSD with delo 400. lol really picks up mileage and a little more power, exhaust is a little louder / lower too. No idea what it does for lube, but cant hurt. The kerosene, #1 diesel, little gas, and the constant use of REAL diesel ( bought in 92, off road dyed farm diesel) or any of those things might be good / bad too. So far the only thing the truck really disagrees with is the #1 fuel oil. But thats been in a basement for gawd knows how long. I dont run addatives per say other than what i mentioned, with the exception of ATF in a new filter.
A few of the above mentioned do make starting the truck interesting sometimes, especially the WMO, when it gets down in the 20's it takes starting it about 5 or 6 times before it will stay runnin. But i ether start as well

i have put over 200k miles on the current injector pump in my 88 running nothing but ULSDF.
no addatives at all, and no problems. there is plenty of lubricity in the ULSDF to lube the injector pump.
farmert , the link bashby listed is whre i got that info from. i was off a few i had schaeffers at 3rd or 4th it was 6 th. from the info i got howes was only slightly better than no additive at all. i used howes for years til i read up on that test a year ago or so.
Here in TX, gelling is not so much of an issue. I use Diesel Kleen in every tank. I have read that a little biodiesel added to the #2 is one of the best lubricity additives there is. I came across that article a few weeks ago. If I find the link, I will post it. Bio would be the cheapest additive you could buy. Not sure how well it is against gelling, though.
From what ive always understood though, Howe's is not intended for lubrication. Its just a stabilizer, keeps water out and diesel from gelling, at least thats all i thought it was supposed to do. I know a few semi drivers who swear by it in a refer tank in cold weather.
