Only one vent choice?????

Hey,
I have an '89 F-250 and I have a number of problems with the climate control switches. First off, the fan only runs on high speed. Second, the air is directed only out the defroster vents, no matter what setting it is on. What could cause all this? It doent have A/C, only off, vent, floor, floor/def. and def.

TIA

1. Open resistor pack.

2. Loss of vacuum to control head.

This may be a dumb question, but where is the control head? Is it inside the cab or under the hood?

Thanks

On this model year I usually start by looking at the vacuum line under the hood on the passenger side, white in color that goes to the recirculation actuator, also under the hood at the cowling. That line loves to deteriorate and crack or crumble.

Resistor very possible as mentioned. Could be due to excess leaves in the box from what I see in the picture or even a mouse or squirrel under the hood chewing wires and vacuum lines.

Bustec, it runs like a champ and the brakes have their own set of issues. The "rear antilock" light comes on, but I cant find the problem, theres fluid, no leaks, but where are some connectors to look for?

But back to the heater, what does the control head look like, is it on the pass. side or drivers side?

Homer, There's no leaves in the box, it has been in the garage all fall, it was only outside to re-fuel after washing off all the dust that found a home on it.

I'll take a look and see if I can find all the stuff you guys are talking sbout.

OK , im guessing that that thing circled in red is the reason it only works on high speed.

I dont know if this is that white wire your talking about (circled in blue) or not homer......but i broke it. I didnt know it was so brittle!!! It seems like a softish plastic hollow tube. How do I go about replacing that?

Thanks

I just splice it with a good rubber vacuum line. One that will just squeeze over the original. You may have to cut it out of the loom to find a decent piece to splice on to. All the vacuum lines are brittle at this age so be carefull with all of them. And yes the other part circled is the resistor.

Of course there is a possibility that the switch is the culprit as well. Remove the screws on the resistor and see if it heavily rusted, especially at the solder points.

I uncovered it a few months ago, and yes, it was heavily rusted. I tried to get one at NAPA, but they said it was a "stealership" part.

Well I am a "stealership" technician. I think you can afford 12 bucks or so for a new one...

Sorry, didnt mean to offend you, but some items they are a little bit on the pricy side. I never checked it out, I was just tought I could live with it.

So now I know your a dealership guy, how do I replace it? I was afraid on tugging the wires on it cause I thought the wires might break off (like everything else on this truck...ha ha). Is it just the plug and all I have to do is re-connect the wires or what....I have no idea.

Sorry about the stealership thing!

There is a plastic socket that plugs onto it. The tabs on the plug get brittle like everything else so you have to carefully pry at it with a screw driver. Sometime you can get lucky and just pull straight back and get it to pop off. Then just take out two screws and remove the resistor.

I dont like dealer prices any more than the next guy. But you have to realize they have to buy thier parts from Ford or Motorcraft, and they are slave to thier cost on the item. Sometimes thier cost is higher than you can get the same part for on the internet. But they are under contract to buy from thier sources. It doesnt help to have a 4 or 5 million dollar building to pay for either as well as all the overhead, and thats a relatively small town price...big cities can rocket much higher than that.

I dont know if you can see it or not from the picture, but the tab is already busted off.

OK, I'll take a trip to canton sometime this week and see about getting that resistor and a vacuume line, by the way, can i get vacuume lines at Autozone and what have ya.

Hopefully that will help with everything and maybee, just maybee, I can warm my feet up now....lol

vacuum hose is readily avaliable at most parts supply stores in bulk off the roll. That is how you would get it from the dealer. Just buy it by the foot.
