Made a big mistake by trying to fill the DEF tank and the fuel tank at the same time. I had a funnel in the DEF tank and the fuel dispenser locked and the fuel did not shut off when it was full and diesel fuel went into the DEF tank. I did not start the truck and had the truck towed to the dealer. The DEF tank had to be replaced and was told that the tank is on backorder since there is a new design for the DEF tanks. I was told that I am #15 on the list of 25 DEF tanks being released this week, so there must be a few tanks being replaced. The dealer told me that the old design is being replaced due to a few design flaws, but would not go into detail of what the issues of the old design were. Cost of old DEF tank design replaced .. $1800, cost of new DEF tank design replaced .. $1300. When my truck arrived at the dealer the service person told me the diesel techs have only been doing oil changes with the new 6.7 liter diesels.
Sorry to hear about the accident with the DEF fill, these things certainly aren't cheap to repair. I don't understand a couple things though...
First of all how can fuel overfilling from the fuel fill point make it into the funnel for the DEF tank? Even with a funnel there it just doesn't make sense. Not saying it didn't happen, just hoping to understand what happened here.
Secondly, why would they need to replace the tank? Even if there's contamination I don't understand why they couldn't drain, flush, refill, and send you out the door. Did they explain to you why?

I can't emagine that diesel fuel would damage the tank.
16 days later and still no DEF tank. The truck sits in the dealer parking lot with no activity. People, please stop buying these trucks for a few weeks so I can get a replacement tank!
New part number for these DEF tanks (BC3Z-5J225-KA) are on back order and who knows when I will get a new tank.
