Today I pull into a truck stop to fill up my DEF Tank. When I try to fill it up it would only put in .001 gallon before it would click off. After about 5 minutes I go inside and ask the attendant if they were having problems with their DEF filling pump. They said no and that they would come out and show me how to fill the DEF tank. They came out and watched what was going on and said that the magnet that hold the DEF valve open was missing from my truck. Has anyone else had this issue? This is only the second time that I have attempted to fill the DEF tank and I have 10,200 miles on the truck.
Yes, many truckstop DEF pumps require a magnetic collar to be slipped on over the nozzle to allow the DEF to flow.
The truckstops often have one of the magnetic collars to loan out, apparently the one you stopped at didn't?
You can buy them online, see them for anywhere between $25 and $50.
I lucked into mine for free way back when I first got my truck.
Also, most all Flying J and Pilot truck stop's DEF pumps don't require the collar to operate. Loves all require it, and it's hit or miss with independents.
Isn't the magnetic only on the Truck stop fill's so why do they expect their customers to have one to purchase their product. If they expect me to purchase one I will go elsewhere.

Any of the DEF pumps, truck stops or not, might require the collar to be able to operate. And most don't cater to the pickup truck crowd so they generally care very little whether you have the collar and can buy $10 or $12 worth of DEF from their pumps or not, it's the 18 wheelers that matter to them. Most of the 18 wheelers built now, their DEF tanks have the magnet built into the filler neck so they don't need the adapter.
It was/is really stupid that Ford, Ram and GM don't build these trucks with provision to use the same DEF filling equipment as the 18 wheelers. And GM is extra stupid, owing to the fact that their DEF tanks are under the hood, a really huge PITA to deal with.
I am embarrassed to admit it but I almost put my fuel additive into the DEF tank while thinking about work! I caught myself just in time.
On my very first fill up I put in my credit card, made sure I hit the diesel button. then grabbed the pump with the green handle. It would not pump, thankfully.
It turns out the gasoline pump had the green handle and the diesel pump the yellow handle. I now actually smell the nozzle tip before pumping.
I try and treat my truck like my guns. Check to be sure they are unloaded, then check again, then check a third time. It can't hurt if you do and it can possibly help. l DO NOT take anything for granted!
Last night I ordered the DEF Magnevator by Five Star DEF - Activates Magnetic DEF Nozzles at Truck Stops. I am just glad that hopefully someone else will learn from my problem and save them some frustration. It was $13.50 and I can get DEF for $2.59 a gallon now. I also have the Ford DEF Filler and 5 gallons of DEF in my garage. Down here in hurricane central you have to be a good Boy Scout and BE PREPARED!

Both my son and son-in-law borrowed the dually to move furniture from Ann Arbor and Chicago to Austin in two separate trips. I pre-filled the def tank to make sure they didn't need to open it (3200 miles rt each). and we went thru the smell the nozzle instructions.. nervous nelly while they were both gone.. SIL had the truck in Chicago Feb-May

I am not sure that all DEF jugs have a standard size/thread cap on the jugs.. Also wondering if the use of this unit will prevent the automatic shut-off process of the nozzles..
Appreciate the info, but I think we need some actual reviews of the product..
Right now, I am leaning toward the do-jobby (technical term) that goes inside the filler neck. That doesn't help with allowing you to refill your jugs however...
