Distributor for a 239, Can you . . .

Howdy,

The distributor to my engine is bad and I might be able to get another one but there is a slight problem. Mine has a 13 tooth drive pinion on it but the replacement I can get has 14 teeth.

The question is: Can I take the 13 tooth pinion and put it in place of the 14 tooth on the replacement dizzy shaft and leave everything else the same?

The engine is a 1954, 239, EBU block

the shaft will probably be different where it engages the oil pump drive.if its the same just change the cog.

Cool - Unless someone said "absolutely not," I was going to give it a try. I am told the shaft is slotted (not hex head) for mating up to the oil pump drive shaft. And, slotted is what I need.

I replaced the 54 239 dizzy (mine had 14 teeth). with a rebuilt 55 merc. unit.
The shaft end was different but since I needed a new oil pump anyway I put a 55 pump on and all matched up. The new pump is a gear driven one and should work better than the old, which was an off-set cam oil-slinger style.

Good luck with your upgrades.

Yes you can. I had an EBU 239 and it had a lot of different parts on it I found out later...

I removed the Load-O-Matic distributor and replaced it with a newer one from a 292. The "Load-O" had a 14 tooth gear on it and a flat type oil pump drive gear on it. (someone must've already changed it) I had to get a newer type 292/272 etc oil pump and a hex drive shaft to use the newer one.

A lot of the parts on the 239 are interchangeable with the other Y-blocks.

My 239 had 272 heads on it and a 292/272 intake manifold on it. It also had a 14 tooth cam in it so the newer dist just dropped right in.

The first thing you want to do according to many Y-block enthusiasts is dump the Load-O-matic distributor for a much newer one. I also installed a Pertronix unit in mine.

My newly rebuilt, balanced and ported 292 will also get headers, a 4bbl carb and a new MSD billet-type electronic distributor when I put it all back together.

Regards,

Rick
