I read until my eye's bled, previous post and can't find a good solid thread on installing a power booster behind the master cylinder on my 78 2wd 302 auto truck. I don't mine pumping the brakes twice to stop, but here soon the truck will be given to my up and coming daughter as her truck. I would like parts number and even step by step procedure of installing if possible. question like brake pedal rod , do I have to change them out for a longer length etc.
Get the entire master cyl and booster assy from a parts house. Check with user Mil1ion aka Dennis for the exact details on any extra parts you might need.
I have a 78 F150 2wd with power brakes, if you have any question(s), post on this thread, as what questions you might have or what comparison(s) you would like to make?
First off you need booster number FT-38
This number is stamped in the eyelet of the booster pushrod,as shown below.
"Precision" booster rebuilders number is #2512296.
For used be careful as you can only use a 77-79 (only to a certain VIN# on a 79 truck.)
If you find a 79 with the last 6 digits in the Vin# are higher than DJ0001. that booster will not fit.
You will need the Power Brake pedal assembly as well.
This requires removing steering column and some dash parts
Thanks for all the replies; there is no cruise control, Do I need to get some items like the pedal assembly and booster from a salavage yard and other parts from auto supplies shop?
I would leave it with drum rear & disc front, but plan on restoring to give to my youngest daughter and having to pump the brakes for a new driver could cause problems.
I would of though since it had factory disc, it wouldn't of been an option to have a power booster from Ford factory.

Reason: updating
it sounds like you have air in the system somewhere, i had to do that until i bled my brakes... may be worth a shot first, also check the pads+shoes and make sure there good and meaty, and the rear is well adjusted.

There isn't much to get
as I said in my previous reply, you will need the Power brake pedal and most likely the pedal assembly..just to be sure.
You will need the fulcrum style linkage that booster and brake pedal linkage hook up to.
In a lot of cases you will need to have the booster tesed before installing it.....and MAKE ABSOLUTELY SURE you have the exact booster you need as per my reply above ...at the very least ....if the booster you get isn't any good you have the $125.00 core they will need for a trade
or
they can just rebuild the one you have.
Look in your phone book for an air-vac business to do the test.
also get the Proportioning valve off the donor truck.
If you find it difficult to find these parts..e-mail me
I inspected all brakes and got alittle over 50% wear left on them, also bleed system and even change out the rubber boot on the master cylinder. Additionally I don't have a leak at either the lines or rear cylinders. I just figure since it doesn't have a power booster, the disc brake on the front are just alittle advance than having drums up there.
Does, other with this style of braking system, don't have to pump there brake to get a solid stopping power.
Thanks;
Mitch
Thanks for the replies Dennis; I'm starting to understand this upgrade system. Don't truly understand the fulcrum linkage part, is it just a sleeve or rod that connects the booster to the brake pedal?
