Well i am 15 and im looking to getting my first truck. I am looking at my uncles farm truck, its a little beat up but its a beast. It's a 1973 or 1974 Ranger 4x4 Auto. V-8 What can i be looking at for gas milage? Any good sites to get parts for it?
thanks
Well try some of the site sponsers like blue oval truck parts lmctruck.com NDP.com and so they have parts but i think they are a bit pricey but probalbly worth it dont forget local junkyards i was in your position last year and i wanted a 70s ford truck bad but gas mileage aint the greatest depends on the engine tranny and rear axle ratio and if its 4x4 that makes it gas mileage worse i think the dual tanks is nice but still they are built like a brick lots of metal so i ended up buying my 93 and now am planning to get a 70s for play like drive on occasion and to fix up good luck
It sounds like a good truck and they are lots of fun, but if you are going to drive much the 8-12 mpg in a 4x4 will eat you up. If you drive 10,000 miles a year and pay $2.50 a gallon at 10 mpg, it will cost you $2,500 for gas. If you had a car that would get 30 mpg your cost for gas will be about $830. It might pay to use the truck for fun and buy a cheap econo car to drive around. Just a thought. That is why I have 3 Ford trucks and mostly drive a "95 yota.
"modern" trucks don't get much better mileage than these old beasts.
According to the US goverment (www dot fueleconomy dot gov) the 2006 F150 5.4 4x4 get's a combined MPG of 15. That sure isn't that much better than the 12 mpg that is pretty easy to obtain on the old technology.
But yes, cars do get better mileage, that's why I drive something that gets 32 mpg and isn't nearly as cool as the truck.
I drove a '92 Taurus for a summer. Almost all the miles were city. I'm not kidding when I say it got less gas mileage than my Toyota (F100 gets 8, but that's another for another forum). That 3 L/auto tranny Taurus was a waste of my time. Thankfully I didn't have to buy it (dad's car).
An old Ford pickup fixed up right gets a lot of attention (besides MPG) when you're in high school.
As probably everyone would say, these old trucks don't get the best mileage, in fact if you get 10-12 mpg that would be pretty good.
I was real happy with Jeffs Bronco Graveyard.
Auto Krafters, National Parts Depot, Blue Oval Truck Parts are also good companies. There are other companies, you just have to search around on the internet. The sponsers here at the left side like Mil1ion stated makes it easy to find something.
California Mustang also has a Ford Truck catalog now...
You can find online catalogs from:
Blue Oval Truck Parts
National Parts Depot
LMC Truck
Jeffs Bronco Graveyard
I suggest ordering catalogs from all of them that way you can see everything in print and take it with you to school for when you get bored in class...I mean...when you are done with homework...LOL...My locker was littered with truck and car magazines and catalogs...
I wish I could have started off with my dad's old farm truck 76 f250 390 4x4 4spd, but instead I got stuck with a 89 dodge aries K grandma's car. Now all I own is Fords!
