Windshield frame

I just noticed that the top of my windshield frame is bowed upward. It is crowned about 1/4 inch in the center.

Is this the way they were built or is mine tweaked?

Glass not installed yet. This is off of a parts rig. I don't have another one to compare it to.

This is why I'm asking if it is supposed to be straight or have a slight crown to it. I don't want to go to the effort if it is going to cause an install problem.

That surface should be flat. Is the whole upper panel bent, or just the mounting surface for the top? If the glass channel is damaged, you will have trouble installing and getting the windshield to seal. New replacement frames are available. I think you will save a bit of trouble if you find another one, new or used.

Thanks Jason.
The whole upper panel is bent including the glass channel. Imagine that, I bought another piece of junk.

I might try to pull it down with a few bar clamps before I junk it though. It's only about a quarter inch bowed.

I was also thinking of eliminating the hinge under the windshield by welding it in permanently and bracing the top of windshield back to the rollbar. (This is a roadster)

Regards
Ken

If you weren't so far away I would give you one for a very small fee. Has a little rust on it that can be sanded. Rust isn't through the metal. It is straight though.

I wouldn't try welding a run that long or you will have nothing but a warped mess. Also the windshield needs to be able to be folded to get the back screws out of the dash pad unless you just leave them out. If the thing ever ends up on it's top the windshield frame usually needs replaced for sure. Also the hindge takes up about a quarter inch. If you leave it out you will need to shim this space somehow.

When I put my Bronco together I put a healthy dose of non hardening seam sealer in the hinge and shut it up. Then bolted the thing in place never to be opened again by me and it doesn't leak any air at all now. I left the back screws out of the dash pad as I said earlier. It was -8F when I went to work this morning so air leaks are a big deal. The glass seal is the most important. It's easy to seal the top to the windshild frame.
