A few weeks ago, my 03 F250SD 7.3 started sputtering while on the highway. After reading some posts on this site, I ended up replacing the CPS 5 days ago. Everything has been fine. This morning I did some running around with no problems. Then this afternoon, I get in to do some running, and the truck is not shifting correctly. It does the first shift fine, but then doesn't shift again until around 50 MPH and 3000 rpms, and when it does, it's pretty jerky. ANy ideas??? THinking about putting the old cps back in to see how it runs and then go from there. The truck is chipped, however the shifting problem is the same running it at the stock setting as well. Please help. Thanks.
the cps has nothing to do with the way the truck shifts. is your od light blinking? if it is it could be the vehicle speed sensor in the rear diff. try taking your chip out completely and not just putting it to the stock setting

The OD light is blinking. I took the chip completely out, and still the same problem. CRAP!!!!!
take the vss out of the top of the rear diff and clean it. put it back in and it might fix your problem. it is a cheap part if you want to just replace it right away but that would be my guess of what the problem is
yea, I already tried removing the sensor, cleaning it off the best I could and then put it back in. It didn't do anything, problem still there. I am planning on picking up the sensor tomorrow and putting it in to see if that fixes it. Hopefully it does as I am not wanting to put in a new trany anytime soon.
is this something that autozone can check with their readers, since they do it for free????
They will try, but it won't work. Most hand held scanners can't read the Ford PSD codes. You'll need something like Autoenginuity to run at home, or take it to a shop that can run a comprehensive diagnostic.
How many miles are on the truck? What did you see when you cleaned the VSS? And out of curiosity, what kinda chip does it have?
Also, new VSS may work for a short time but the fluid may need to be changed if the problem returns/persists.
I have approx. 129000 miles on the truck and run the 6 position bully dog chip for the past 5000 miles with no problems. Also, I just had the trany fluid changed, so that shouldn't be a problem. I picked up the VSS today for $18 from Ford, with a discount, but I am putting that in tomorrow morning, and HOPEFULLY, that solves my problem. I will post when I am done.
alright, put the VSS in today and the new CPS and truck still doing same thing - not shifting into 3rd without getting up to 50mph+ and 3000 rpms. Also, tow light flashing on and off. Any other ideas before I take it in??????????
I don't have a code reader, nor do I know anyone who does, so I think I may be taking it in to get looked at. The OD light starts flashing around the point the truck should be shifting into 3rd gear if that helps.
